Horned Toad

Mommie and Daddy and the kid beans were all out at Grannie beans house last night and Daddy bean found this in the garden: This is not the actual toad that they found, Mommie didn't have her camera with her. The young beans got to pet it and it's tail didn't fall off. Mommie asked it what its name was she thought that it said, "George." When they got home Mommie looked for information about them on the internet. This is what she found.

1. It is not really a toad at all, or even related to the frogs.

2. Its face looks alot like a toad, and has a short wide body, much like a frog.

3. Horned toads protect themselves in a variety of ways. Their body is spikey and flat, so when startled they usually will flatten out and sit really still so as to hopefully not be seen.

4. They also have been known to inflate their body and hiss a lot, and in extreme cases, they can even squirt blood from their eyeballs to attack predators, a far as 5 feet away.

Wow, I've never seen a creature like that before! Squirting blood from their eyes sounds really gross!

Apparently, horny toads used to be extremely common in Texas and kids would catch them and play with them all the time. But there aren't many of them left anymore. Scientists say that their disappearance might be the warning signal of climate change, or too many humans, or all the other nasty things that we do to our planet.

We are still hoping and purraying that you find Buddy.

Is he a lizard or a toad? I like to chase lizards, but the ones around here do not have spikes all over them like that! George looks a little scary.

I wish I could make blood squirt out of my eyeballs. I tried it, but it doesn't work.

Yuk, I faint at the site of blood. From their eyes, double yuk!! I hope Florida doesn't have those Horned Toads. I'm covering my eyes, I can't look at it any more.

Hey, that looks like a neat thing to play with.
